Ivy is found in forests and parks where it often forms a dense ground cover. As an ornament, it is grown in gardens where it can be seen creeping up the walls of houses.
Ivy leaf has been used against coughs since the 16th century and was officially recognised as a cough reliever in the 19th century. Ivy is characterised by its relatively high content of saponins, the glycoside hederin (helixin), tannins and flavonoids. The dry extract of the leaves is part of mass-produced medicinal preparations in the form of drops, suppositories, effervescent tablets and syrups.
