Ivy is a very familiar plant - it can be found in forests and parks, where it often forms a dense ground cover. As an ornament it is grown in gardens where it can be seen creeping up the walls of houses.
Ivy leaf was used against coughs as early as the 16th century and was officially recognised for its ability to relieve coughs in the 19th century. Ivy is characterised by its relatively high content of saponins, the glycoside hederin (helixin), tannins and flavonoids.
